Beginning October 1, 2019, all notary public applicants, both new and renewing, must pass the Montana Notary Public Examination. The exam has 50 questions and will test your knowledge of Montana notary laws, rules, and procedures. You will have 60 minutes to take the exam. To pass the exam, you must score at least 80%. If you do not pass the exam the first time, you may retake the exam up to three times.  If you have not passed the examination on the third try, you will have to wait three months before taking it again.

When you pass the exam, be sure to print off the Notary Public Examination Certificate, which must be attached to your Application for Appointment as a Montana Notary Public.
