HELENA, Mont. — Montana’s business landscape is thriving as the Secretary of State’s Office welcomed nearly 6,000 new business registrations in August 2025, up from about 5,200 during the same month last year, according to the latest Montana Business Economic Report. The steady growth highlights the state’s rising reputation as a hub for innovation and small business success.
“Montana’s entrepreneurial spirit shines bright,” said Secretary of State Christi Jacobsen. “Each new registration is not just a number; it’s a demonstration of bold ideas turning into real businesses that contribute to local economies and community spirit across the state. We’re proud to continue reducing barriers and costs to make Montana the best place to start and grow a business.”
The month’s registrations contribute to an exciting year-to-date total of nearly 51,000 new businesses registered through August 2025. Montana remains on track to surpass last year’s record-setting 64,000 new filings, marking the fourth consecutive year of remarkable new business growth.
This surge is fueled by initiatives led by Secretary Jacobsen’s office, including cutting registration fees in half, eliminating multiple other fees, and waiving the annual report filing fee for two straight years, saving Montana businesses millions of dollars. The 24/7 online filing portal also helps entrepreneurs launch businesses on their own schedules.
Upward momentum is seen across Montana, with communities large and small experiencing growth in diverse sectors, from outdoor tourism to technology to agriculture-based innovation.
“Montana remains open for business,” Jacobsen added. “As we look ahead, our focus remains on facilitating innovation, supporting job creation, and fostering vibrant communities. I want to congratulate all the new business owners embarking on this exciting journey. Thank you for choosing Montana.”
