HELENA, Mont. — Montana Secretary of State Christi Jacobsen announced that more than 6,000 new businesses registered with the Secretary of State’s Office in May 2025. According to the Montana Business Economic Report, roughly 6,500 new business registrations were filed last month.

“Montana has had three consecutive months with more than 6,000 new business registrations, highlighting our state’s pro-business environment,” said Secretary Jacobsen. “I’m proud to be a partner to the Montana business community, getting government out of the way so they can create jobs, foster community growth, and make a positive impact on our state’s economy.”

May’s data continues a positive trend of new business registrations in Montana. Under Secretary Jacobsen’s leadership, Montana has experienced record new business registrations annually, with nearly 64,000 new businesses filing in 2024. The state is on pace to break that record again in 2025, with more than 30,000 registrations filed in the first five months. Secretary Jacobsen previously announced that a record number of new registrations had been filed in April.

Secretary Jacobsen and the Secretary of State’s Office are proud to have increased efficiencies and made it easier to do business in Montana. Secretary Jacobsen cut registration fees in half for new Montana businesses, and she waived the annual report filing fee in 2024 and 2025, resulting in significant savings for businesses statewide. Businesses in the state can file and access their documents 24/7 through the Office’s online filing portal.

Secretary Jacobsen continues to fight on behalf of Main Street in Montana. She urged President Donald Trump to repeal the Biden Administration’s burdensome small business mandates and joined colleagues and businesses across the country in celebrating the suspension of the enforcement of the Corporate Transparency Act. Secretary Jacobsen also forced an out-of-state organization to stop sending deceptive mailings to Montana businesses.

“Montana’s small businesses are crucial to our local communities and have a vital role in shaping our state,” said Secretary Jacobsen. I remain committed to making it easier for them to thrive, and I won’t stop advocating on their behalf. Thank you for doing business in Montana!”
