HELENA, Mont. — Montana Secretary of State Christi Jacobsen stood for Montana hunters and shooters during Monday’s Land Board meeting, voting to approve an easement that moves the proposed Logan Public Shooting Range an important step closer to reality.
Secretary Jacobsen and her colleagues on the Land Board approved an approximately 86-acre easement on state trust land for Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) to develop a formal public shooting range near Logan. The proposed facility would replace a long-existing informal shooting area to help meet the need for public recreational shooting opportunities in the Gallatin Valley.
“This is a huge win for hunters, shooters, and families in the Gallatin Valley and across Montana,” said Secretary Jacobsen. “Montanans deserve safe, suitable places to sight in their hunting rifles and to teach the next generation about responsible firearm handling. I was proud to vote to approve this easement to move us one step closer to providing these opportunities, while generating revenue from our state trust lands and respecting neighboring landowners.”
Secretary Jacobsen previously encouraged Montanans to provide public comment about shooting opportunities on the state trust parcel. Developing a formal shooting range would provide a dedicated place for recreational shooting at a location that was historically used for that purpose. The project also addresses concerns about safety, cleanup, and impactsto neighboring landowners.
“Montana’s hunting and shooting traditions are worth protecting, and providing a dedicated public range supports responsible recreation,” said Secretary Jacobsen. “From hunter’s safety courses to competitive shooter training, Montanans will be able to utilize this space to build the skills and confidence that go hand-in-hand with firearm safety.
“Thank you to the community members, including the local gun clubs, and the teams at the Montana DNRC and FWP who have worked to move this project forward for our Montana family, friends, and neighbors.”
With Secretary Jacobsen and the Land Board approving the easement, Montana FWP can now move forward with designing and planning construction of the public shooting range.
