HELENA, Mont. — Secretary of State Christi Jacobsen was proud to approve multiple projects during this week’s Land Board meeting that will benefit Montanans and maximize revenue from state trust lands.
In addition to advancing a public shooting range in Gallatin County, which Secretary Jacobsen announced earlier this week, the Land Board gave the green light to timber sales in western Montana, infrastructure improvements serving Montana homes, businesses, and a proposed elementary school, and a project to expand public access for hunters, anglers, and recreationists in Flathead County.
“Responsible management of our state trust lands continues to deliver real benefits for Montana by generating revenue, expanding public access, supporting our timber industry, and helping communities provide essential services to Montana families,” said Secretary Jacobsen.
Secretary Jacobsen was joined by her colleagues on the Land Board in approving timber sales in western Montana expected to generate more than half a million dollars. In addition to the revenue, the timber sales will reduce wildfire potential, reduce insect and disease issues, and harvest timber recently downed by strong winds.
“Montana’s timber industry is an important part of our heritage and economy, and these sales put our natural resources to work for our trust beneficiaries, including Montana schools,” said Secretary Jacobsen.
The Land Board also advanced a proposed land banking acquisition in Flathead County, moving the state closer to providing additional public access. Secretary Jacobsen supported moving the acquisition forward, emphasizing the importance of expanded public access for Montanans.
“Montanans value our beautiful, great outdoors,” Secretary Jacobsen said, “and this is an opportunity to expand public access in Flathead County for future generations to enjoy Big Sky Country.”
Secretary Jacobsen also approved an easement for the city of Belgrade, which will provide essential infrastructure for a proposed new elementary school in the Belgrade School District. An additional easement was approved to support reliable telephone and broadband services for homes and businesses in Broadwater and Gallatin counties.
“I’m proud to serve on the Land Board and to support the practical projects that help our communities meet their needs, improving the daily lives of our Montana family, friends, and neighbors,” said Secretary Jacobsen.
